Sofia Int'l Film Festival opens with Oscar glamour

The 11th Sofia International Film Festival opens in the Bulgarian capital Thursday, with three Oscar winning films competing for more awards.

    The festival has attracted this year's Academy Award winner for best documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. The film spells out the perils of failing to tackle climate change.

    The other two Academy Award films descending on Bulgaria are best foreign film winner "The Lives of Others," and best actor winner "The Last King of Scotland."

    These films along with some 100 features, 20 documentaries and50 short films will compete for 10 awards at the festival in the coming 11 days, according to the organizers.

    The festival's awards include Special Premiere, European Screen, New Bulgarian Feature, Bulgarian Short Film, Global Screen, Documentary, Retrospective and newly established Best Director.

    The organizers also invited members of some of the most famous film festivals in the world like Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Montreal to make up its jury.
